Food garden at Sherwood Community Centre
Transition Sherwood is developing a community food garden on a site attached to Sherwood Community Association centre on Mansfield Road, opposite Woodthorpe Park. We got agreement in September 2009, a 'garden group' been meeting to plan during winter, and will be gradually starting gardening work in early 2010. The group is also hoping to link up with other local projects such as allotment groups to share skills and join in with schemes such as planting fruit trees in part of Woodthorpe Park and in the front of Sherwood Community Association garden.

It's more fun in an Eco team...

Thursday 26th November 2009, Sherwood Methodist Church, 7.30
Tom Veitch ifrom Global Action Plan introduced Eco-teams - small groups where people meet once a month, usually in each others' homes, look at different aspects of energy saving and greener living such as energy and water consumption, waste, food and transport, take some key weekly and monthly measurements, and support each other to take actions and swap ideas. Eco-teams tend to work especially well with people who live quite near each other, such as on the same street or block, and have often led to longer term sharing and organising. We also heard from people who had taken part in Eco-teams locally last year - and some of the longer term results such as a shared worm composting bin, and experiences of keeping track of power consumption.
A training morning for people interested in leading an Eco-team was then held in January 2010, and several Eco-teams may be setting up around the area in the next six months or so.

Community Food Garden meeting 12th November 2009
At the end of September, Sherwood Community Centre agreed that the group could go ahead with the community food garden. A small group met at the garden in October, and then met at Sherwood Methodist Church to start planning in more detail - both the actual garden and how to organise things - and to plan to get on with work that can be done in winter.
Annual General Meeting 15th September 2009
Transition Sherwood held its first Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 15th September 2009. The AGM was attended by 22 people, meeting in one of the community rooms built inside the recently refurbished church building at St John's Church Hall, Mansfield Road, Carrington.
The meeting covered formal business such as a report of the year's activities, confirming the constitution, agreeing the accounts, and membership of the co-ordinating group. There was a 'DIY Teach Yourself Peak Oil' activity, and discussion of ideas for projects and how to take these forward. New projects include cycling, small-scale skills sharing, and the idea of encouraging walking and promoting knowledge of trees, by a tree walk into the city through Sherwood - with trees along the route identified as a poetic sound-track that you can listen to while walking.

Film show 23rd April 2009
A Convenient Truth: Urban Solutions from Curitiba, Brazil

The group showed the film 'A Convenient Truth - Urban Solutions from Curitiba, Brazil' at Sherwood Methodist Church, Mansfield Road, at 7.30pm on Thursday 23rd April.
The film shows how the city of Curitiba has transformed problems into cost-effective solutions that can be applied in most cities around the world. The documentary
focuses on innovations in transportation, recycling, social benefits including affordable housing, seasonal parks, and the processes that transformed Curitiba into one of the most livable cities in the world. Uplifting, inspiring - and a good antedote to 'The End of Suburbia'!

Transition Nottingham's Great Spring Sowing, Sunday 22nd March 2009, The Arboretum, Nottingham

The group had a stall at 'The Great Spring Sowing' event at the Arboretum on 22nd March 2009. We were busy all day meeting people and helping visitors to 'sow in what you throw' - planting seeds in trays made of reused household waste - margarine tubs, yogourt pots and all sorts. It was great too to meet up with people from other transition and environmental groups around the Nottingham area and swap news and ideas. More pictures of the event at

The group showed the film ' The End of Suburbia' at Sherwood Methodist Church at Thursday 29th January 2009, followed by discussion and refreshments.
What can Sherwood & Mapperley do to be less dependent on oil?

There was music and food at events in August and November 2008 when local people drew up ideas for how the community could become less dependent on oil.
There were loads of ideas on the themes of energy, transport, skills and resource sharing, and community networking.
At the second meeting, people volunteered to organise or join groups working on community gardening, transport, and skill sharing.
Growing food

There were ideas for community gardening in local parks and unused spaces, and sharing gardens and skills.
Transport

People volunteered to work on cycling, and researching into car sharing schemes.
Skills exchange

Groups will work on setting up a skills exchange system, and passing on skills through workshops and social events.
